"Verse"

Gassho Satya,

I don't know why I mentioned the Heart Sutra. I was thinking of the sect associated with that Sutra as the only way to study and practice Buddhism. But I'm not a Buddhist. I use the phrase Jack Kerouac coined, "Dharma Bum". I channel a lot of writings. But I also have some classical education in poetry and liturature so I guess some of those guys channel also. I've been re-reading Ribaud and Verlain: two great 19th century French poets. Here is one I wrote. It's actually dated which is rare for me:

SOLSTICE (1995, To Sarajevo)

Winter my solace
Begin.

One second after midnight
On this shortest day of the year
Re-birth. Begin.

Beneath many layer of iced humus
A minute grub becomes the shape of a bowl
Moves ever so slightly inside a soul
Empty, cold, hollowed out by time
Yet bold, indomitable.

A waxing crescent moon holds hope,
Waits for light from the farthest star
To shine a moment of eternity in her lap.

Inside the old forest
Supple mistletoe memories
Cling to a giant oaks knurly body.

Two lovers separated by the great distance
Of a long night that befell them
Embrace beneath a web of barren branches
And dream of springtime.
