That is why so many follow the pomp and circumstance of religion which is truly and opiate. Your Diamond group use the same techniques as Nazi's, yet we see them first as Holy Buddhists. It is why feeling and perception must be honed. Dealing with a trained group of brain washers is tough stuff.
Just walking on the trail at dusk and seeing the coiled object on the trail and the mind and every cell sees "snake" and reacts with emotional energy. The coil is just a piece of cord.
Mindfulness helps here; really hones the mind making it stronger.
