"Tibet"

Gassho Ciaran,

While the Chinese will one day reap what they sow, we will do the same because our inaction towards the circumstances in Tibet is the same as condoning it. Our collective governments of the world need to stand up to China against this type of violent oppression. The world has been sitting on it for 50 years now, turning a blind eye to the situation. Had Tibet been rich in oil or other valuable resources the injustices that China imposed on the people of Tibet back in the late 1950s never would have been allowed to come to fruition. China wouldn't even be there today. But what is Tibet to most people in the world but a high, snowy plateau in an inaccessible corner of the far remoteness. How does what happen there affect me here as I sit 7000 miles away? No man is an island.

The problem is we're addicted to the cheap Chinese labour. All our stuff is imported from there. Most of our industries rely on China. To boycott China or impose some kind of trade embargo on them at this point would mean economic disaster. We could never beat them in a military sense, especially not on their own turf. We're so afraid of offending them. We've sold ourselves to another country all for the sake of an HDTV and a cheap toy in our McHappy Meal.

The world has to change. We all need to contact our political leaders and pressure them to do what's right in spite of the discomfort it might cause us. Lives are at stake. People's civil liberties are non-existent. Someday we might be the oppressed people fighting for freedom. How would we feel if the situation was reversed?

Metta,
Ann
