Gassho.
I am new to the forum myself, having recently discovered it.
Daniel (which is my first name as well), the best thing you can do right now is concentrate on reading and learning as much about Buddhism as you can. Also, DO NOT REACT. It is a very human desire to want to react, but ultimately this will harm you, as it will anytime you give into your desires. Let them tease. When the tenets of Buddhism start to click in you, you will no longer care.
I am in my thirties, have been a practising Buddhist for some time and I am still harrassed by people. At one time, I was even physically assaulted with weapons (honestly!) because of my beliefs. But the more I know and learn, the less I care. I begin to pity those who poke fun at what they don't understand.
As for where to start, there are a few good books:"What the Buddha Taught" by Walpola Rahula (which somebody else mentioned)
"The Art of Happiness" by His Holiness the Dalai Lama (some Buddhists don't like this book, but I find it invaluable)
And read these websites:

These are just starting points, however. The best way to explore Buddhism is to find Buddhists, and the following site lists some Buddhist centers around the US:

Peace be with you, my friend.
