"Detachment, personal involvement, and experience"

posted by anonymous

Ann,

My grandmum had Alzheimer's and I found it very hard, especially when she didn't know who I was after we had been friends for 20 years. Being personally involved I could not be detached, but I could practice compassion.
When my dad was in the last stages of Parkinson's, experiencing chemically induced Alzheimer's as a side effect from the meds, I was able to be both detached and compassionate. Only previous experience was the difference.

Even Milarepa had to wrestle with this one,

Metta,

Boatman
